During a one year project, the Frankfurter Entsorgungs- und Service GmbH (FES) introduced SAP R/3 for all classic and logistical processes and outsourced the applications to INFO AG's computer centre in Hamburg.

FES is the largest waste management enterprise in and around Frankfurt. More than 1,600 employees work for the waste and refuse disposal and container services. FES also operates several waste disposal facilities, e.g. the waste incineration plant in Frankfurt and a large automobile workshop. At INFO AG, 10 systems have been running on eight separate servers for the current 440 users since 2nd January 2003.

All data in one system
With its introduction of SAP and unique module adaptation systems, particularly IS Waste, FES one of Germany's leading waste management enterprises. Isolated IT applications are a thing of the past for FES. Up-to-date data is constantly available to the entire company in an electronic format. General management and operative control, e.g. route planning and scheduling, are now much more flexible and efficient.

SAP server in Hamburg
FES has separated itself from the servers, the heart of the new software solution. From the 12 companies that took part in the invitation to tender, FESawarded the contract (initially restricted to three years) to operate and maintain the SAP R/3 platform to INFO AG based on their outstanding cost/performance ratio. This enabled FESto decrease the amount of resources needed to carry out IT processes as well as significantly reduce costs. Andreas Lipp, Team Leader of the FESsystems subproject: "All systems have been documented in great detail so that they can be controlled from Frankfurteven though they are based in Hamburg. All relevant SAP servers are safeguarded using a high availability technical solution. System availability runs at almost 98.5 percent."

Security through redundancy
All of the locations are connected to the main distribution frame at the FESheadquarters in Frankfurtfrom where they can be controlled by the FES IT department. A double installation of communication lines guarantees system availability. Our computer centre in Hamburg, all FES operating sites and FES's own training centre are integrated via leased and failsafe telecommunication lines.

New software
The SAP system hardware is based on eight separate Hewlett Packard UNIX servers. FES chose Oracle as the SAP data platform. Distributed over ten systems,  INFO AG operates the IS Waste, HR, BW and EBP SAP applications. IS Waste provides FES with a special SAP industry solution that, by flexibly classifying the roles of all relationships, ideally maps itself to the customers and core processes of waste management.

The SAP module HR (Human Resources) simplifies, for example, the planning of staff resources as all attendance time and time of absence are recorded in IS Waste. We also support FESwith payroll procedures using output management. Since the beginning of the year, BW (Business Information Warehouse) has been consolidating facts and key data for reporting activities. The electronic, catalogue-oriented ordering system, EBP, enables purchasing and acquisition procedures to be carried out in real time whether it is for ordering office materials, tools or A+B articles.

To acquaint employees with the new software, FES provided training courses for approximately four months leading up to the end of March 2003. An additional IT hotline was made available to the key users of the individual specialist areas.

440 users are currently integrated in the SAP R/3 system, however, this number is set to rise: we have ensured that FEScan increase its number of users to 1500.
